Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Truro City
Braintree kick off their home campaign against newly promoted Truro City who finished third in the Southern Football League Premier Division South last season.
They are managed by former Plymouth Argyle captain Paul Wootton who was appointed City manager in July 2019.
Their overall record last season was P 42 W 26 D 9 L7 GF 88 GA 41 Points 89
Their away record last season was P 21 W 12 D 3 L6 GF 41 GA 30 Points 39
In the play-offs their third place finish gave them a home tie with Poole Town. The game finished one-one, but they went through on penalties four-one. The play off final was played at second placed Bracknell Town whom they had already beaten home and away during the League season. This time each side took it in turn to score, before City ran out three-two winners.
In the F. A. Cup they were knocked out at the first time of asking losing five-two at Merthyr Tydfil, whilst in the F. A. Trophy they overcame Salisbury City one –nil, before being knocked out by Beaconsfield Town two-nil.
It had been a remarkable season for City as those two cup/trophy defeats were the only games they lost during a fifteen match unbeaten League run that lasted until 26 November 2022 when they lost three-one at Chesham having had two players sent off.
Top scorers last season for City were Tyler Harvey with twenty eight goals, Andrew Neal with twenty two goals and Dan Sullivan with fourteen goals.
The two sides last met in the 2017/18 season and the game at Clockhouse Way finished one-one. Cody Cooke opened the scoring for the visitors before Roman Michael Percil levelled early in the second half. The equaliser can be seen here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM-ajWYN-1I
Truro kicked off this season’s campaign with another goal feast as they beat Welling United five-two.
Last week Braintree returned from a wet and blustery Taunton with nothing to show for their endeavours apart from a fortuitous debut goal for Nnamdi Nwachuku who scored closing down the keeper who kicked the ball at the striker as he was rushed into clearing it.
None of the away teams managed to win on the opening day of the season last week, hopefully the Iron can repeat last season’s success with a long unbeaten home run starting with three points on Saturday.
