It was a warm welcome and a comfortable win for the Iron first teamers and trialists at the biggest club in Ipswich yesterday afternoon as the Iron stepped up their fitness at Ipswich Wanderers. The first half saw all those who are signed begin the game, with Jack Sims in goal and led again by John White. Joe Grimwood played to the skipper's right whilst Kyran Clements took his usual left berth, new wing backs Josh Dawodu (pronounced Dow-doo) on the right and Toby Stevenson on the left. In the middle was Alfie Payne and Leon Payne with A N Other whilst the 70+ front line saw Will Davies linking up with Nnamdi Nwachuku (both N's at the beginning of each name are silent, pronounced Nam-dee Wah-choo-koo). Most of the game in both halves was played in the home sides half of the pitch. The Iron looked sharp with the wing backs well advanced and a constant outlet for the midfield. The opening goal on 9 minutes came as the result of some good play starting from the halfway line on the right, a pass towards the corner flag looked overhit and going to safety but number 11 managed to keep it in and find the supporting Dawodu, his low cross found Nwachuku with his back to goal just inside the middle of the box, spotting the incoming overlapping Stevenson, he laid the ball off perfectly for the wing back to drill home on the angle. Five mtes later Davies was set up on the edge of the box but dragged his shot just wide. On 26 minutes, Wanderers try to play out from the back, but the keeper's pass is quickly read by number 11 who latches on to the ball and tries to chip the stopper, but he gets a hand to it but it falls kindly to Nwachuku who composes himself before firing home. Davies again tries his luck from just outside the box, but fires over. Dawodu raiding down the right puts in a good cross but Nnamdi heads it wide. The third goal comes on 33 minutes, an inswinging Stevenson corner from the right is quite flat, but Grimwood stoops at the near post and it angles across goal into the opposite corner of the net. Nnamdi has another chance centrally in the area but hits it at the keeper. In a rare home attack, a counter sees the ball crossed in from the left and their striker sticks out a foot with enough of a touch to evade Sims. The second half saw Reggie Lamb start with a host of trialists. The pattern of the game remained the same with total Iron dominance, but you have to question some of the decisions players made in opting to shoot as they tried to impress when there were sometimes better options. Many chances come and go with some heroics from the home keeper combined with some poor finishing before the fourth goal arrives with four minutes left, a thumping shot from distance into the top corner. Our first home friendly is this coming Saturday at 3pm as AFC Sudbury visit, come along enjoy the sunshine, come and take a look at the new boys and maybe have a drink or two.
