Vanarama National League South - Eliminator
Worthing F. C. v Braintree Town
Iron fans could not have foreseen this outcome at the end of last season having been in a relegation scrap for most of the 2021/22 season and then having to rebuild yet again with a new manager and just two players.
Angelo and his team have done wonders with a small squad having not only secured a play-off spot, but also picking up the Essex Senior Cup and brought back smiles and hope to the supporters.
The final day matches saw a shift around in the teams that had occupied fourth to seventh prior to kick off, with Worthing passing Chelmsford City to take fourth, whilst St Albans City’s home win against Farnborough was enough to put them into sixth and drop Braintree to seventh.
Which all means it’s back to Worthing once again, eighteen days after the Iron had lost there two-one on 18 April 2023, Zak Bradshaw scoring for Braintree. This was the reverse of the scoreline at the Dunmow Group Stadium on 15 October 2022 when Matt Rush and Alfie Matthews scored the Iron goals.
Worthing put together a strong finish to the season using their games in hand to reel in the teams above them, winning six of their last seven games, a run which started after five games without a win!
Worthing finished up as second top scorers in the VNLS with ninety two goals scored. Leading marksman on League/F.A. Cup/Trophy goals with twenty seven is Ollie Pearce, making him the season’s second top scorer behind Dominic Poleon of Ebbsfleet United. No one else at Worthing made double figures.
The hope for Braintree is that Worthing conceded seventy two goals, the same as bottom placed Hungerford Town which is joint sixth worst in the League. Braintree are the lowest scorers in the top seven, but joint seventh best in the League for goals conceded. Only Aaron Blair with twelve goals has hit double figures with Alfie Matthews, Kyran Clements and Baris Altintop on eight goals each.
This now becomes a mini-cup knock out and Braintree, if successful, will have to play all their games away from home, just as they did in the Essex Senior Cup this season and in their successful campaign in the 2017/18 season. If they win at Worthing, they will travel to Oxford City on Sunday 7 May 2023.
