Match Preview
Friday 7 April 2023
Vanarama National League South
St Albans City v Braintree Town
Friday afternoon sees the Iron travel to Hertfordshire to play play-off rivals St Albans City in a fifth versus sixth six pointer.
The Saints are currently two points better off than Braintree with a record of:
P 41 W 19 D 9 L 13 GF 64 GA 46 Points 66
Saints manager David Noble who played in the Football League for Watford and West Ham United amongst others and also played for the Saints was appointed as head coach in November 2022. So far they are looking good to improve on last season’s ninth place finish.
Leading the goal scoring charts once again is Shaun Jeffers who has found the net twenty times in League, FA Cup & Trophy this season, so is close to matching last season’s twenty seven goals. Zane Banton has nine goals and Mitchell Weiss has six goals.
Former Iron keeper Michael Johnson and centre back Michael Clark are still part of City’s squad.
When the two sides met at the Dunmow Group Stadium on 27 September 2022, the Iron won a close fought game by one goal to nil, scored by Levi Amantchi. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=phQJ7sCMftc
Our last visit to Clarence Park was on 12 February 2022 and again the Iron secured a one-nil victory, this time through a Stefan Ilic goal, highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp7ZeKLEzCg
Our most recent biggest win there came in 2019 when Michael Clark and two Adam Mills goals saw Glen Driver’s side secure a three-nil win.
Recent form looks better for the home side with three wins and two draws for the Saints following their last home defeat, two-three to Eastbourne Borough. Braintree though are now paying the price for not converting their chances in a three game losing streak against teams lower down the VNLS.
All five chasing teams behind the Iron could potentially pass them if they all win and Braintree lose and three of them have at least one game in hand. It’s going to be a close run thing and the Iron need to find their scoring touch quickly to ensure that they are on the right side of that play-off dotted line.
