Vanarama National League South
Hungerford Town v Braintree Town
Iron’s second away game of the week takes them to twenty second placed Hungerford Town.
The Berkshire based team are in a relegation dogfight at the foot of the VNLS and their record to date is: P 36 W 8 D 8 L 20 GF 36 GA 50 Points 32. They are the third lowest scorers in the League behind Concord Rangers (32) and Taunton Town (33) and also the joint number of wins alongside Concord; in fact five of those eight wins have come in 2023.
Leading scorers are Dan Roberts and Jake Evans who have five goals each. They bolstered their forward options recently by taking on Joe Boachie from Braintree and he scored in their midweek five-two thrashing of Weymouth F. C which put an end to four games without a win.
They managed to reach the fifth round of the F. A Trophy before going out at home three-two to Farsley Celtic.
The two sides met at the Dunmow Group Stadium on 26 November 2022 with the Iron winning an entertaining game three-two. The first half was goal less, but one minute into the second half a drive from outside the box from Kyron Farrell proved to be too hot to handle by the Crusaders’ keeper. Hungerford came back with two goals courtesy of Leighton Thomas and Ty Ward before two goal is two minutes saw Alfie Matthews level and Jon Benton hit a goal of the season contender. Matthew Berry-Hargreaves would see red for the visitors in the closing stages of the game. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q189PWWxl_0
On our last visit to Hungerford on 12 October 2021, the home side won two-nil, Jake Evans and Sol Wanjau Smith scoring for the Crusaders. The Iron’s last win there was on 7 April 2018 one-nil, scored by Dan Thompson.
The Iron came home with another point from Tuesday evening’s game with Hemel. They had gone behind to a Charlee Hughes goal before new loan signing Ansu Janneh equalised just before half time.
Braintree have had a run of games against several teams fighting relegation and have struggled to assert their game as they look to keep up their play-off push during this thirteen game unbeaten run, but teams around them seem to be having the same problems. This game will no doubt offer another test to the ambitious Iron side.
