Vanarama National League South
Hemel Hempstead Town v Braintree Town
Tuesday evening sees the Iron head to Hertfordshire to play Hemel Hempstead Town. The Tudors currently sit in thirteenth place in the VNLS with a record of:
P 37 W 13 D 10 L 14 GF 39 GA 46 Points 49
Former Iron legend Brad Quinton took over as manager on 30 December 2022 having not managed since his departure from Welling United in January 2021. He signed one of his former Braintree play-off winners Josh Hill in January. Other players who will be familiar to Iron fans is full back Andrew Elefthiriou who was at Braintree in 2019 on loan from Watford and Luke Holness who started the season at Tonbridge Angels.
Since Brad’s arrival his record is P 14 W 4 D 4 L 6 GF 10 GA 17 Points 16
Overall they remain inconsistent although they have already surpassed last season’s points haul of forty eight points, so there has been a some improvement. What will be of concern to Quinton is that in fifty percent of those games they have failed to score, which includes four blanks in their last four matches.
That stat is reflected in their top scorers who are Josh Castaglione and last season’s Iron forward Luke Holness who have five goals each. Jordan Greenidge had scored six for the Tudors before his move to Tonbridge and Ogo Obi had also scored five before moving to Slough Town.
In the F. A. Cup this season they beat Royston Town three-nil before going down three-one away to Peterborough Sports. In the F. A. Trophy they drew one-one at Kings Lynn Town going through five-four on penalties before being eliminated at home two-three by Maidenhead United.
The first meeting between the sides this season came on 16 August 2022 when the Iron triumphed by three goals to one. Aaron Blair put the Iron ahead just past the half hour mark before Obi levelled just before half time. Blair restored the Iron’s lead four minutes into the second half before Willie Clemons rounded off the win in the sixty eighth minute. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWeQe5Hut7M
The Iron triumphed on their last visit to Hemel on 21 August 2021when birthday boy Luke Holness scored a hat trick in a three nil win. Braintree have scored three goals in their last four fixtures with the Tudors, but the first of those four games saw the home sides’ last home win against us when Brad was Iron boss s they came from behind to triumph four-three.
Saturday saw the Iron toil to a point in a goal less draw with struggling Weymouth. The normally reliable poacher Aaron Blair failed to convert two clear opportunities in the first minute of each half. Their cause wasn’t helped by a straight red card for striker Alfie Pavey in the fifty third minute.
That result saw them swap places again with Oxford City but they remain three points ahead of chasing clubs Havant & Waterlooville and Worthing. With injuries beginning to take their toll, it will require the lads to be on top of their game to secure the three points.
