Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Weymouth F. C.
Saturday sees the Iron take on twenty second paced Weymouth at the Dunmow Group Stadium.
After a poor start to the season in which the Terras didn’t win any of their eight opening fixtures, the board appointed Bobby Wilkinson as their new manager in September 2022. The former Hungerford Town manager now sees his new charges one place and two points better off than his previous club and fur points adrift of safety.
Their record is P 34 W 9 D 4 L 21 GF 42 GA 62 Points 31. They have the third worst goals conceded in the VNLS behind Dulwich Hamlet (73) and Slough Town (64).
Leading scorers this season are former Barnsley striker Bradley Ash with sixteen goals and former Grimsby Town forward Ahkeem Rose who has twelve goals.
Former Iron defender Dan Matsuzaka joined the Terras this season.
Recent form has seen them win two, lose three and draw one of their last six fixtures. They lost their home midweek fixture to Chippenham Town which came after two good wins, five-nil at Concord Rangers and a three-one home win against Dartford.
When the Iron visited Dorset on 12 November 2022, the Terras had not won at home, but they put that right with a one-nil win courtesy of a goal from Dan Matsuzaka, who has made a habit of scoring against his former employers.
They followed that game by exiting both the F. A. Cup, three-one at AFC Wimbledon and the F. A. Trophy four-two at Worthing F.C. Like the Iron they have reached their county cup final and were due to play Poole Town this week, but was postponed due to adverse weather.
Braintree meanwhile travelled to play play-off rivals Oxford City on Tuesday evening. They lead two-one with eleven minutes to go with Jack Turner and Aaron Blair’s tenth goal of the season, but with all substitutions made and skipper John White going off injured, the remaining ten men were unable to hold on in the eight minutes of added time, but took a creditable point which keeps them in third place in the VNLS table.
With ten games to go there will be inevitable shifting of places as teams look to secure a play-off spot, especially the second and third place which would give those teams a home tie in the final shake up.
Both sides need the points for different reasons so expect a hard fought encounter.
