Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Hampton & Richmond Borough
Saturday sees the Iron take on eighteenth placed Hampton & Richmond Borough at the Dunmow Group Stadium.
The Beavers appointed a new manager in January 2023; Mel Gwinnett, who left his post at Barnet where he was the assistant manager. Gwinnett had previously worked in different roles at Stevenage, Bristol Rovers, M K Dons and Exeter City where he was a player. He replaced Gary McCann who had been at the Beavers helm since 2018.
Their VNLS record to date is: P33 W 8 D 8 L 17 GF 41 GA 57 Points 32
They had a run of seven League games without a win between 26 November 2022 and 18 February 2023, the last of those saw them thrashed six-two at home by Ebbsfleet. However, they did go on to win their next two matches both at home, beating Eastbourne Borough three-two and Dulwich Hamlet two-nil, before losing on Tuesday evening one-nil at home to Tonbridge Angels.
Top scorers for the Beavers this season are Tommy Wood with seven goal, but he has recently returned to his former club Tonbridge Angels and Tommy Block with six goals, he has also left the club to join promotion chasers Dartford. That leaves Brandon Barzey and Dean Inman with four goals each currently as leading scorers at the club.
Our visit to the Beveree Stadium on 29 October 2022 saw the Iron run out comfortable three-nil winners. Jon Benton opened the scoring on twenty two minutes with Levi Amantchi adding a second five minutes from time. Dean Inman then put through his own goal two minutes into added time. The Beevers last visit to the Dunmow Group Stadium was on 2 April 2022 and they took the three points courtesy of a Tyrell Miller-Rodney goal in the second half. In fact Braintree’s last home win against them was on 19 August 2017 when Phil Roberts and Billy Crook set up a two-one victory, Charlie Wassmer scoring a late consolation for the visitors.
A buoyant Braintree will be looking to further their play-off ambitions after a long overdue win at Chelmsford City in the Essex Senior Cup on Monday evening. With Braintree currently topping the form table, manager Angelo Harrop will want to make sure there’s no complacency ahead of this fixture against a relegation fighting Beavers team.
