BBC Essex Senior Cup Semi- Final
Chelmsford City v Braintree Town
The Iron are back in action tomorrow evening for their third meeting of the season with local rivals Chelmsford City as they attempt to reach the final of the Essex Senior Cup Final for the first time since the 2013/14 season.
Again they have been drawn away having already won at Maldon & Tiptree (2-4), a bye as Southend United dropped out of the competition and an inspired three-two comeback at Colchester United in the last round.
Chelmsford have reached this stage by winning two-nil at Great Wakering Rovers F. C, followed up with a five-one home win against Coggleshall Town and a four-nil home win against Witham Town.
The Clarets have been in three of the last four finals of this competition, losing three-one to East Thurrock United in 2018/19 and two-one to Billericay Town the season before that, but were winners in 2016/17 beating East Thurrock United one-nil, that was their eighth time of winning the trophy.
This season the two sides went to head as per usual in a Christmas/New Year double header and again the Iron were unable to gain a win in either game. The Boxing Day match at the Melbourne Community Stadium saw the Clarets triumph two-nil, whilst the reverse fixture on New Years Day saw the Iron twice come from behind to draw two-two.
Since those games Braintree have climbed the table and overtaken their neighbours with the Iron now in sixth position in the VNLS, three points and one lace better off than the Clarets.
Chelmsford continued their F. A. Trophy run with a two-one home win against Wealdstone, before travelling to York City where they drew one-one before losing five-four on penalties.
Since playing us their League form reads P 10 W 3 D 2 L 5 GF 5 GA 12 Points 11. Simeon Jackson remains as their leading scorer with nine goals, followed by Tom Blackwell with seven goals.
In comparison, the Iron’s form since our last meeting is P 11 W 6 D 4 L 1 GF 16 GA 11 Points 22. Not including this competition, our top scorers are currently Aaron Blair with nine goals, Alfie Matthews, Barius Altintop and Kyran Clements with six goals each.
The Iron will be favourites on current form, but we all know our recent record against the Clarets is not the best. The other semi-final tie sees Concord Rangers host Hornchurch F. C on Tuesday evening.
A good crowd should add to an intriguing encounter, COYI!
