Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Dartford
Saturday sees promotion chasing Dartford visit the Dunmow Group Stadium for a second versus seventh VNLS encounter.
The Kent side had a brief spell top of the League as they overcame leaders and neighbours Ebbsfleet United in the Christmas/New Year double header winning one-four and four-nil. They are now nine points adrift of their rivals for the tile with a record of:
P 31 W 19 D 4 L 8 GF 62 GA 34 Points 61
They’ve managed to maintain their challenge without having a goal scorer to reach double figures so far. Their leading scorers are Samir Carruthers with eight goals, Pierre Fonkeu with seven goals and Charlie Sheringham with six goals.
Having exited the F. A. Cup in their first game at home to Beckenham Town (1-2), the same fate befell them on the F. A. Trophy losing four-nil to Swindon Supermarine.
The sides last met on 5 November 2022 when the Darts won with a very flattering four-one score line. After a goal less first half, Charlie Sheringham put the home side in front five minutes into the second half. Tom Bonner would then receive a second yellow just past the hour mark, but ten men Dartford would double their lead six minutes after the red card with a wonder strike from Luke Coulson. With just under ten minutes left, Kyren Clements gave the Iron some hope as he scored from a corner only for Dartford to score a third on ninety minutes through Carruthers, who then doubled his tally with a penalty in the sixth minute of added time.
At the Dunmow Group Stadium last season, the two sides met on 28 December 2021and played out an entertaining two-two draw. All the goals came in the second half with youngster Gabriel Piorkowski and Gio Crichlow giving the Iron a deserved two nil lead, but the Darts fought back with two goals in the last ten minutes with goals from Jake Robinson and Jack Jebb. The last home win for Braintree against Dartford was on 9 January 2021 in the covid hit season, Percy Kiangebeni and Taofiq Olomowewe gave the Iron a two goal lead. Jazzi Barnum-Bobb saw red for the visitors on eighty two minutes and Chris Dickson scored a late consolation as the game ended two-one.
Just like the meeting last season, Dartford will come here as favourites, but their recent form is inconsistent and in 2023, their six games have produced three wins, two defeats and a draw, whilst Braintree have four wins and two draws.
The Darts had no midweek fixture whilst the Iron overcame bogey side Dulwich Hamlet three-two on Tuesday evening. Baris Altintop opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season, before Alfie Pavey netted his first home goal on the stroke of half time. Quade Taylor reduced the deficit before they were reduced to ten men just past the hour. Jack Turner looked to have sewn things up for the Iron with his first goal for the club, but a goal from Will Wood in the first of seven additional minutes made it an unnecessarily uncomfortable end to the game.
This will surely be the sternest test at home this season, can the Iron muster another stirring performance to maintain the unbeaten home record?
