A regular round up of our youth teams appears in each matchday programme. This is the latest one....
These winter months are traditionally very frustrating for fixture secretaries of youth teams. Very few games survive the weather, and even those pitches that could survive a pitch inspection are called off days earlier by local authorities.
It was no great surprise to find all of last weekend’s scheduled games were cancelled. Most clubs have more games to play than there are weekends left in the season. At youth level, midweek games are seldom practical so it remains to be seen how it will all pan out. A break in the weather and a bit of sun would certainly help.
Our last team to get in a match of any description were the Academy Under 19 side. They were fortunate that their opponents on 4th March were Aveley. Their 3G pitch is getting used by many teams in South Essex at the moment as Isthmian clubs scramble to complete their games by April 25th. Rustiness can’t be used as an excuse for the 3-0 defeat as they were in action just seven days earlier, losing 4-0 to Romford.
A second game in the same week had been scheduled, but Lowestoft Town’s visit two days later was called off early. Hopes were moderate that they would have entertained Dagenham & Redbridge on the Wednesday just gone, an outcome that wasn’t known at the time these notes were penned. It was a game that the team were looking forward to. The Dagenham side are the only ones below Iron in the table and lost their last two games 11-2 and 20-0.
The photos on this page are from their 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic Trust last month.
Next up is a trip to Lowestoft on Wednesday afternoon.
The Under 18’s must play two more league games to reach the halfway mark in their season. They will be keeping everything crossed that tomorrow’s home game with Coggeshall Town goes ahead. Kick off is at 10.00 a.m.
