Strutton may be back in action
By Simon Spurgeon of the Braintree & Witham Times
The Iron striker is on the comeback trail after an ankle operation and manager Danny Cowley has been impressed with the 26-year-old’s efforts to get himself back to fitness.
Cowley said Strutton would be assessed again in training and if he has come through that well enough then he may get a run out in the reserves’ Thurlow Nunn League division one game at Stowmarket Town tomorrow.
The Iron boss said: “We’re hoping Charlie will train well and if he comes through that OK then he may get 45 minutes in the reserves on Saturday.
“We’ll wait and see on that one.”
With the Iron having paid the price for failing to make more of their goal scoring chances in both of their opening two Vanarama National League games so far, a possible Strutton return can only be positive news.
They will have to face Tranmere Rovers without him tomorrow, though.
A big crowd is anticipated for the visit of the former Football League side to the Avanti Stadium (kick-off 3pm) and even though it is set to be a big test, the Iron will be looking to post their first points of the campaign.
They have been beaten 1-0 at Chester and 3-1 at home by Lincoln City so far, but know that more clinical finishing would have earned them more.
Cowley said that’s something for his team to work hard on, but he wants them to enjoy facing a side that was top of League One when the two faced eached other in the FA Cup three years ago.
He added: “They were a big Football League side not so long ago and were top of League One less than two years ago so we’re looking forward to them coming.
“I’m told they’re bringing seven to eight hundred people so it should be a great atmosphere.
“These are great games for us because we have nothing to lose in them.
“We have quite a few players who have come up from a lower level and they should embrace these occasions.
“We have all worked hard to get here and that hard graft is for games like the one on Saturday.
“We’ll respect Tranmere but we won’t fear them.
“We may not be able to compete with them off the pitch in terms of resources and fan base, but we’ll give it everything we’ve got come three o’clock on Saturday
