By Simon Spurgeon of the Braintree & Witham times:
No excuses but Cowley is left ruing missed opportunities
Braintree Town manager Danny Cowley said there would be no excuses for his team’s poor second-half display that saw them get beaten 3-1 by Lincoln City.
Having had the better of the opening 45 minutes of their Vanarama National League clash at the Avanti Stadium, the Iron paid the price for not taking their chances when they were on top.
The Imps came out looking sharper in the second half with three goals that left Braintree still looking for their first point of the campaign.
“I thought we played well in the first half,” said Cowley.
“We played brightly and with energy, a tempo and a purpose.
“We created some good chances, but we needed to be more clinical and then in the second half we were disappointed.
“We didn’t come out right from the kick-off.
“We made a possession mistake to put us on the back foot and then we conceded a really poor goal.
“We played some pretty football, but we’re not interested in that; we’re interested in winning football.
“I’m not interested in hard luck stories either.
“We’re not going to be a team that says ‘we played well and had good chances, but decisions just didn’t go for us’.
“There are no excuses and that’s our mentality.
“In the second half, we got what we deserved and we lost the game.
“We came out fast and with intensity in the first half; we wanted to do that in the second but it didn’t happen.
“That disappoints me and we looked ragged at the end so that’s something that needs to be looked at.
“We lost our way at times.”
