Just got back; poor performance tonight through all the team. Bright start with 3 chances in first ten minutes; then Concord soon adapted and nullified any attack. Paine gave away a needless free kick on the half way line and whilst he argued the award; they got the ball down, took it quickly and with Braintree players out of position, hit a good ball out to the right for their forward to run on and score. Sparkes should have scored in the dying seconds of the first half, but hit it straight at the keeper. Second half was pretty bad with the officials not helping by making poor or no decisions. Their second came after a foul by Davis and from the free kick, Hamann spilled the ball and left an easy finish for the Concord striker. Mulley scored in the last second following a corner. The lack of goals scored in the final fixtures shows where a lot of the problems lie in both creating and taking chances. A sad way to finish the season.

A match report below. I could have strangled the BBC Essex so-called commentator, Mark Babbage. For much of the game you could hear cheers and shouts from the 448 attendees to show that something was going on, but what exactly we were not to know as he and his sidekick talked endlessly about many other matters, often at great length. Such as the previous playing records of many of the players and, worst of all, a lengthy discourse on the nicknames of many of the teams in the various leagues. Absolutely dreadful and I would have thrown a brick through my PC's screen had I had one to hand! Our good friend Gordon should have a word in his ear when next he sees him. How to do it was best shown to me by the presumably local guy from his accent, who did BBC Essex commentries at the Halifax and Gateshead matches. They were a model of perfection. www.basildonrecorder.co.uk/sport/11180782._/

We rarely get off the bus to play lesser fancied opposition and that pattern showed tonight.

Let me give you the high point of last night. The Iron support was fantastic, never heard them make so much noise. If you could have turned that into goals, we would have won 10-0, sadly the team performance didn't match up. Apart from the magnificent win at Luton, we have scored 2 goals and one of those was a penalty in our last 7 league games and not one by a striker. We were devoid of ideas last night. Why Nick just kept thumping the ball upfield only for it to come back (every time) I just don't understand, we are better than that. Watch out for Concord in the Conference South next year, if they carry that performance through, they will walk it.

Be careful what you say orangenblue people will start thinking your slagging off our prolific strikers!! I agree Concord looked a good team and with regards to the great Iron turnout I agree but where was these fans against Luton and Barnet? Also Air raid siren seriously The old boy next to me kept looking into the sky expecting the Lufftwaffe overhead!!! Dont panic Mr Mainwaring.

Agreed about the crowd. They were excellent, unlike the team. I didn't count, but it seemed like 200+.
On the night, the better team won. They showed more desire, physicality, and ran themselves into the ground.
Sean didn't cause their Centre Backs any problems all night, and Dan Holman's confidence seems to have deserted him. Dan Sparkes should have scored - If only it had fallen to his left foot instead. However, most of the team were missing all night.
On a separate note, and not making excuses, because as I said above, the better team won, BUT, that could be the worst refereeing display I've seen in the last 5 years. If those Officials were being assessed, I hope that got a very poor assessment.
At times, I thought I was watching a wrestling come rugby match, rather than football.
I think he only booked Chez all night, (he probably should have been sent off) and when he finally decided to speak to one of their players for a bad tackle, he spoke to the wrong player.
I don't know how 200-300 people saw the elbow of their No 11 smash into Matt's face, and yet 4 Officials all missed it. I also lost count of how many times the Assistant Referee on the dug-out side was not up with play.
Finally, I made added on time at least double to the numbers that the Officials made it.
Still, the season is done now. The Management, Board, and Players all deserve a good rest, as it's been a long tough year. I suspect the Board and Management will be working hard in the background to ensure that we are ready for next season.

The crowd was given out as 400+ by the D&R announcer. You're spot on with the rest of the analysis, Braintree didn't win because of the officials, but because of their own lack of "nous". No more air raid sirens please!

Sean didn't cause their Centre Backs any problems all night, been longer than one game this form though - and as stated in other threads, he has in my opinion been poor, cost the team with a silly sending off v Salisbury and has been lucky to get his place back over Cox since then.

I was at the game and I would have found it hard and frustrating. With regards to Halifax and Gateshead, I did the summarizing and Julian Gaunt (independent normally for BBC Devon!!) did Halifax and David Brett (BBC Essex) did the Gateshead game. The Southport game was myself and Paul Garrety (now working for 5Live).

Last nights game was one of the poorest displays all season. As already stated poor officals to say the least but apart from the opening 10 minutes the game really highlighted our frailties. I have a point to raise. I think Devs is unsure what to do with Chez, Look our best and most solid performances come from a back 4 of Ryan, Dean, Alan and Sam and Painey sat in front of them. So if we then play Kenny at the front of the diamond and Sparks and Mulley on the wings , the only way to accomodate Chez is to play 4-5-1 and with Sean on his own upfront we are not strong enogh to do this as then or attack becomes limited and one dimensional, We need Dan H on and with any luck our new 20 goal a season stricker so, how do we accomodate a 5 man midfield?? If anyone from the forum was at last nights game I am sure like me you will agree that we again looked toothless and clueless upfront. Every single ball that went forward was aimed at seans head unfortunatly his studs must of been made of lead as he failed to win any headers in the first half. ( Trust me we kept counting). And any crosses we managed again seemed to bypass the 6 goal season striker. Remember we were playing a lower division team and should of run rings round them, it looked like roles reversed. You know it was a poor display when Dean wells was our choice for MOTM !! If that had been a league game we would have been more punished. Well done for good support but my head was buzzing all night with the siren. Anyway I shall be bringing my recorder and triangle next season!! Team Ratings Nik- 6 Auf widersane to the big guy Ryan- 6 Could of been more of a threat 2nd half Sam-6 Mr Average again Alan 7 Best of a bad bunch Matt - 5 Poor display lucky not to get a yellow Chez -5 Lost out in midfield too easily Dan s -5 Should of scored but lead foot blocked it !! James - 5 Lacked any threat Kenny - 5 Anyonomous and silly stamp should of been a red ! Dan H- 4 Maybe left his scoring boots and confidence in Southport Sean - 3 And thats generous ( Sorry ) If you was watching the same game as me you would agree. Subs Jordan -6 At least he tried and jumped and even won some headers Brad 5 - Was unsure what position he played in, got drawn into a scrappy end Luke -6 The much called for sub looked like he went to play right back ?? All done and dusted now, keeping one eye on play offs tonight and just thinking what could of been ??

Was there any talent in the Concord side worth pursuing? Big lad in centre Midfield Number 8 seemed to be a good influnce on the game , won a lot of balls, apart from that not really, Number 11 and 4 not sure on names, looked like auditioning for Bambi on ice. Keeper was a short arse and a time waster. Hope this detailed run down helps any potential scouts !!!
