There can't be any doubt that yesterday's stunning victory and the circumstances surrounding it are the pinnacle of the club's 116 years...so far.
There have been many big results in our three seasons in the Conference, particularly last season's 3-2 win at Luton and the party-wrecking 2-1 win at home to Mansfield. Historically, the 1938 Essex Senior Cup win, 9-3 at home to Ilford, resounded out around the footballing world at a time when Ilford were giants of the Amateur game.
There can be no doubt that yesterday's win topped the lot, and in front of the second highest gate to ever watch the Iron (15,739 at Dulwich Hamlet on 5th March 1938 in the F.A. Amateur Cup still leads the way). That record will need a Wembley visit - or league match at Portsmouth! - to top it.
We had previously only won two of our 11 games in front of gates of 5,000 or more. There was last season's Luton win, and then a 3-2 F.A. Cup win at Ipswich in 1930.
Gutted to have missed yesterday's game through illness, and Gateshead on Tuesday is doubtful for me. Good luck to the lads, three points there are going to set up a fascinating end to the season. I watched the first half of yesterday's game on BT Sport - a very frustrating experience on PC - but lost connectivity just after half time and had to put up with radio commentary.
Talking about missed games, I have just realised that I overlooked a personal milestone at home to Nuneaton recently - my 1,000th home first team game! First one was April 1970 - Braintree (including Bobby Robson) 4 Ex-Tottenham All-Stars X1 1. Seems like yesterday!!
