Very sad to hear that Alan Bailey passed away last week. If you ever need proof that life is not fair here it is . A man who always looked after himself , never smoked in his life, cut down by lung cancer. I can remember chatting to him once about his playing days. Nicky Simpson was a youth player then and Alan was unsure whether he had it in him to make the first team. Well, he was proved wrong on that one. Since then The Mighty Iron have risen higher and higher in the league and Alan always followed our results. Good luck mate.

Alan made his debut for Braintree on 22nd November 1988 in the 1-0 home win over Tiptree United in the Eastern Counties League, after a long and distinguished career with Haverhill Rovers. He was pretty much a feature of our defence for the next three seasons, either at central defence or right back and up to March 1991 played 111 games, plus 3 more as a substitute, and scoring 3 goals. He wore the No. 5 shirt in the famous televised F.A. Cup Tie with Barnet in the 1990-91 season. Alan left for Tiptree United toward the end of that season, our final one in the ECL before being promoted to the Southern League and beginning our rise up the leagues. His former club, Haverhill Rovers, held a minutes silence before their game with Histon today and a service in celebration of his life was held at St. Peters in the Field Church, Bocking End, yesterday.
