Another Ex AFC Man On The Move
A left-back who played two levels below the Football League last season has become Haverhill Rovers’ first new signing of the season.
Danny Shipton, who made ten appearances for Braintree Town in the Blue Square South last term, put pen to paper with the Hamlet Croft outfit last Thursday. He previously was with AFC Sudbury.
As well as Shipton, Rovers have also secured the services of captain Marcus Hunt, midfielders Jamie Challis and Louis Harper and 2008/2009’s Echo Player of the Season Stuart Kingham for another year.
“He (Shipton) has been excellent since he’s been coming training,” said Rovers boss Peter Betts. “His attitude is top notch, he’s a quality player and we are delighted to get him to put pen to paper.”
The 24-year-old full-back certainly won’t be Betts’ last piece of business this summer, with at least another seven players being closely tracked at the moment.
New players have been training with Haverhill and could feature in this week’s first two pre-season games, while the Reds have also requested permission to speak to a centre-half and a goalkeeper, who both have Ridgeons Premier experience.
“We have four or five new players training that we want to sign,” said Betts. “Obviously, it’s just up to them making their decision.
“I’ve looked at up to five or six different goalkeepers so we need to make our mind up there and there’s one that won’t get sorted until a bit later on.”
But while Betts works hard to secure new signings off the pitch, the players will return to action on the pitch this Saturday against Anglian Combination League Premier Division side Brandon Town, before one of their biggest pre-season fixtures of the summer takes place at Hamlet Croft on Tuesday, at home to AFC Sudbury.
“I’m just looking to get the players back on the pitch and playing football,” said Betts. “It’s the hardest pre-season a lot of the players have had and it they have worked really hard during it.
“It’s a case of having a look at a few new players and a few different systems.
“Everyone is so motivated at the moment, we have had players coming in for extra training sessions because they know we are going to be judged on what we do next season.”
Midfielder Marc Abbott is back in light training after a long term injury and could be back before the start of the new campaign, and brother Paul, another long term injury victim, will be in the squad to face Brandon and AFC Sudbury.
Vice-captain Joe Harvey is still expected to miss the first month of the new season.
The match at Brandon kicks off at 2pm on Saturday, while the home game with AFC Sudbury is at 7.45pm on Tuesday night, with a £3 admission charge.
