Chelmsford City v Braintree Town
The seasonal derbies continue with our first meeting of the season with local rivals Chelmsford City, following the earlier postponement of our home Boxing Day fixture with the Clarets.
Chelmsford City are currently in 18th place in the VNLS on 9 points, two points and four places higher than Braintree; both having played eleven games.
Last season they were in 10th place when the season was abandoned.
They started 2020 with the departure of manager and former Iron boss Road Stringer. Midfielder Robbie Simpson took over as interim manager, before being appointed in March 2020.
The Clarets were beaten in their first game of the season; an F. A. Cup tie which took them to Kettering Town, where they went down two goals to nil. Since then, like the Iron, they have only won two games in the VNLS.
Their home form is P 6 W 1 D 1 L 4 GF 5 GA 10 Pts 4. Their only home victory came against Maidstone United (1-0), their draw was against Oxford City (1-1) and four defeats to Tonbridge Angels (0-2), Hampton & Richmond Borough (0-1), Chippenham Town (0-2) and Bath City (3-4).
They have lost all of their last six games in all competitions
City’s three top scorers last season were Shaun Jeffers with 13 goals, Sam Higgins with 11 goals and Chris Whelpdale with 9 goals. All three are no longer at the club and have moved on to play for St Albans City, Hornchurch and Eastbourne Borough.
This season, scoring goals has been a problem for the Clarets with only 11 League goals so far, which is one better than the Iron who have the worst scoring record in the League. Adam Morgan recruited from Romford has 4 goals and old foe Charlie Sheringham has 3 goals after being loaned out from Dartford.
There are plenty of familiar faces in the Clarets squad, Billy Crook, Phil Roberts, Cameron James and Chez Isaac.
The clubs last met at the Melbourne Community Stadium on Boxing Day 2019 where the hosts ran out clear winners 4-1. Robbie Simpson opened the scoring on 41 minutes, with Chris Whelpdale scoring on the stroke of half time. Tyler Christian-Law gave the Iron the glimmer of recovery scoring 4 minutes into the second half, but two late strikes in the last ten minutes, from Whelpdale and a Shaun Jeffers penalty sealed the points for the Clarets.
Braintree’s away record this season reads P 5 W 1 D 0 L 4 GF 4 GA 10 Points 3. Expect a low scoring affair if form is anything to go by; although Braintree’s form in all competitions shows three wins, one draw and two defeats in their last six games, hopefully giving them the edge they need to secure bragging rights and three points to overtake their neighbours.
