Vanarama National League South
Tonbridge Angels v Braintree Town
After seven games; Tonbridge Angels sit in 11th place in the VNLS on 10 points.
Last season they had played 31 games and amassed 36 points, with points per game placing them in 15th place.
Like all clubs at this level, they kicked off the season with an F A Cup tie which saw them host and thrash Taunton 5-0. However, drawn at home in the next round against EFL2 team Bradford City, it was the Angels who took a 7-0 drubbing.
In the League, they have only had two home fixtures so far this season, losing 0-2 to Hungerford Town and drawing 2-2 with Eastbourne Borough. On the road they have beaten Billericay Town 2-0, Chelmsford City 2-0 and Ebbsfleet United 1-0; whist heavy defeats came at Oxford City 4-0 and Dorking Wanderers 4-1.
Topping the scoring charts for the Angels last season were Joe Turner with 12 goals, D’Sean Theobalds with 7 goals and Tom Derry with 6 goals, all of whom are still at the club.
Leading the way this season is midfielder Tom Beere with 3 goals, Khale Da Costa, Joe Turner, Ben Greenhalgh, Alex Akrofi and Tommy Wood all have 2 goals.
Braintree have had three games on the road so far this season losing them all, scoring once and conceding 7 goals – Chippenham Town 0-1, St Albans City 1-2 and Eastbourne Borough 0-4.
Last season the Angels managed to complete the home and away win double over the Iron. When the two sides met at Darenth Avenue on 12 October 2019, the Iron were handed out their biggest defeat so far as a physical and direct Angels team cruised to a 5-1 victory. Goals from Tom Derry, D’Sean Theobalds and Tommie Hession-Harris gave the home side a three goal half time lead. Hession-Harris then grabbed his second before Adam Mills pulled one back for the Iron before Rian Bray added the fifth.
After such a bad start things had to change at Cressing Road and with George Borg gone, Lee Harding quickly appointed Ryan Maxwell as manager. Under the new manager’s charge on Tuesday night against Concord Rangers and with eight new players starting, the Iron finally got their first win of the season courtesy of an early Correy Davidson strike. He wasn’t to be the only hero on the night as new keeper Patrick Ohman saved a penalty.
The club now needs to stop the revolving door of players coming and going to give the team a sense of belonging, enabling them to build on the good start they made.
