Braintree Town v Concord Rangers
Having played five games so far, Concord Rangers are currently 17th in the VNLS table on 5 points.
Last season they were in 16th place on 37 points when the season was brought to an early conclusion.
Manager Danny Scopes was appointed last May having previously played at the club as a defender under Danny Cowley.
This season, their F A Cup journey started with an away victory against Hungerford Town by one goal to nil. In the next round they drew Stevenage away where the game ended 2-2, Stevenage going through 5-4 on penalties.
Their form to date has not seen much in the way of improvement on last season. Two home games have brought two one all draws against St Albans City and Welling United. On the road, they have lost to Hungerford Town one-nil, a heavy six-nil defeat to Maidstone United and a first win of the season, four-one at Dulwich Hamlet.
Leading goal scorers last season were Decarrey Sherriff with 10 goals, Joel Nouble (now at Aldershot Town) with 8 goals and Aron Pollock with 7 goals.
Leading the way for them this season is former Woking forward Alex Wall who has six goals to date. Temi Babilola has two and six other players have one goal each.
Last season at Thames Road, the teams shared the points in an entertaining two-two draw. Jason Banton opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a 25 yard shot, largely against the run of play. Five minutes later and the Beach Boys were down to 10 men as Jack Cawley was shown a straight red for a reckless foul on Tom Richardson.
Despite being a man short, Concord continued to take the game to Braintree and drew level 10 minutes into the second half through Sherriff, powering home a header at the far post. Iron then regained the lead on 69 minutes, Cameron Green’s free kick was headed at goal by Richardson, the keeper saved it, but Cole was on hand to sidefoot home from close range.
Concord came back with an aerial threat and with 5 minutes of normal time left, Pollock headed home following a long throw in which wasn’t cleared effectively.
Braintree’s woes continued on Saturday at Eastbourne Borough with their seventh straight League defeat; making them the only pointless side in the top seven divisions in England. Few efforts on goal were punished by poor defending at the other end which led to another four goals bring shipped.
With George Borg falling on his sword, how will the rudderless Iron get on?
