Vanarama National League South
St Albans City v Braintree Town
St Albans City currently sit 6th in the VNLS on 10 points having played only four games so far.
They have played three games at home winning them all - Hampton & Richmond Borough (1-0), Ebbsfleet United (3-2) and Chippenham Town (3-0). Their only game on the road came at Concord Rangers where they drew 1-1.
Their FA Cup run started with a win on penalties (4-3) after being held one all by Mickleover Sports, but their run came to an end at Bishops Stortford where they lost 2-0.
Last season they were just one place above Braintree in 20th on 37 points when the season was ended.
Top scorers last season were Joe Iaciofano with 16 goals, who is now with League rivals Havant & Waterlooville and Zane Banton who netted 8 times and has scored two so far this season.
Leading the goal charts for the Saints this time around with five goals already is former Clarets striker Shaun Jeffers.
There are a couple of familiar names in their squad that wore the Iron orange last season; the popular goalkeeper Michael Johnson and centre back Michael Clark.
When the two sides met last season on the 13th August 2019, a previously unbeaten City came crashing down to a Braintree team that chalked up its first win of the season. A goal from Adam Mills on his debut, followed by another a minute later by Femi Akinwande, gave the visitors a two-nil half time lead. Michael Clark somehow found himself in the opposition box in the 89th minute to wrap up the points for the Iron.
Braintree will go there again in search of their first win and points of the season after losing to Hungerford Town last time out. Tom Hopper scored for the visitors on the stroke of half time before doubling his tally following a contentious penalty award on 69 minutes. A hopeful daisy cutter from Chiedozie with three minutes to play gave the Iron a small glimmer of hope, but it wasn’t to be.
