From the forthcoming epic 2 volume book on the club's history:
One interesting character who had played for Iron during our first two seasons (1898-99 & 1899-1900) was Arthur Valentine. He had also been at Braintree F.C. prior to our formation during which time Sanger's Circus came to town. A silver cup was offered for anyone who would play football with an elephant in the ring, and beat the elephant at the game. Valentine volunteered, triumphed and was presented with the cup. This would have taken place on the Fair Field (where the Job Centre, Library and Bus Park is) in a marquee said to hold 20,000 people!
It’s a great story which only came to light when he returned to the area from Nottingham for his father’s funeral in 1937. No contemporary accounts seem to have survived.
