Braintree Town suffered a blue Bank Holiday Monday as they went down 2-1 at home to Aldershot Town in the Vanarama National League.
The Iron went ahead three minutes before half-time through Jordan Chiedozie's header, however, Aldershot's Charlie Harris pulled one level with just over 20 minutes to go, before with five minuets to go Richard Brodie headed in
With the Iron playing their second game inside 48 hours, manager Danny Cowley made four changes to the team that won 2-1 at Welling United.
Out went Remy Clerima, captain Kenny Davis, Saturday goalscorer Michael Cheek and Sonny Miles, with Mitch Brundle, back from suspension, Chez Isaac, Chiedozie and Simeon Akinola, back from injury, starting.
Iron started brightly, with Akinola almost getting on to a long ball forward, while Isaac curled a shot wide from 20 yards after being given the ball by the visitors just inside the Shots' half.
The Shots created a few half chances themselves as Rhys Browne burst into the Iron box but was crowded out before Jim Stevenson had a shot blocked on the edge of the box, after good work on the left by former Braintree Town man Dan Walker.
The visitors came closest to breaking the deadlock on 23 minutes when a header from a corner was cleared off the line by Sam Habergham. Another header went goalwards and was half-cleared by the Iron before Luke Oliver prodded wide from close range.
There then followed a dull ten minute period where very little happened with neither side able to break each other's resolute defence.
It sparked into life on 35 minutes when Akinola volleyed an effort into the side netting when well-placed after the Shots had made a hash of clearing a ball into the box.
A minute later Browne ran at the Iron defence again and the ball found its way to Stevenson, who fired a powerful effort at goal from just over 20 yards. Will Norris palmed the ball up into the air and it looked like the ball might go in, but it dropped harmlessly wide and the Iron keeper was able to collect before it went out for a corner.
The Iron took the lead three minutes before the break when a cross from the left by Dan Sparkes was met by Chiedozie who got in between Omar Beckles and Nick Anderton to power in a header from six yards out.
The Shots almost responded immediately when an Anderton free-kick on the Iron left was whipped into the box and Brodie smacked a free header against the crossbar, with the ball flying behind.
Sparkes almost had an early chance in the second half when a cross from the right made its way to the unmarked winger at the back post, but he didn't appear ready for it as the ball hit him and move died.
The Iron were happy to sit back and attempt to hit the Shots on the break, who were finding it difficult to break down the resolute Iron defence.
But on 69 minutes the visitors pulled level. A cross to the back post from the left was headed back across goal by Brodie and found substitute Harris, unmarked had time to mishit a volley and have a second go, powering home from nine yards out.
The Shots were on top and Norris made a great close range save to deny Charlie Walker as he latched on to a ball over the top and closed in on goal.
Braintree made changes in an attempt to get a foothold on the game, but with five minutes to go the Shots made their dominance count as a cross from the right by Cheye Alexander was powerfully headed home in off the post by Brodie.
Alex Woodyard drilled a low effort from 25 yards in stoppage time straight at Smith as the Iron searched for a leveller, but they came up short.
Braintree: Norris, Brundle, Habergham, Dallison, Phillips, Isaac (Davis 71), Paine, Woodyard, Akinola (Edgar 76), Chiedozie (Cheek 74), Sparkes. Unused subs: Clerima, Marks.
