Cowley wants Iron to build on first win
Braintree Town manager Danny Cowley wants his team to use the confidence from their first win of the season when they face Southport at the Avanti Stadium on Saturday.
The Iron’s 2-1 win at Bromley was their maiden Vanarama National League victory with Cowley as boss and he was pleased to see his players get rewarded for the hard work they have put in since he took the reins. However, he knows there is more to come, particularly in the attacking threat they pose.
“It is always important to win in this division and any time Braintree Town win it must be celebrated,” said Cowley.
“So we are pleased to win the game, but it also gives us something to build on.
“When you are a new group, that first win builds confidence and hopefully we can draw from that when we face Southport.
“Our performance in the opening 65 minutes at Bromley was good, however, we know there is still more to come. We certainly have to manage seeing games out.
“We had real control for 65 to 70 minutes and were well worth our 2-0 lead. But we should probably have had a bit more if we’d been more clinical and been able to put the game to bed."

BRAINTREE TOWN V SOUTHPORT - MATCH PREVIEW
Port travel to Amlin Stadium on Friday
Southport travel to the Amlin Stadium tomorrow where 16th placed Braintree provide the Yellows next opponent in the Vanarama National League.
Had Southport taken their chances against Gateshead on Tuesday evening, three points was not beyond the realms of possibility. Despite a lacklustre opening spell, Southport were reinvigorated by Louis Almond's excellent long range strike and controlled the game until referee Wayne Barrat awarded Gateshead a spot kick, duly put away by Josh Gillies.
Adam Blakeman made his first competitive start for Southport, with manager Paul Carden taking the time during his post match interview to compliment the quality of Blakeman's set pieces, yet lament that Southport hadn't been able to get a final touch on a number of his quality deliveries.
Like Southport, Braintree were also looking for their first win of the season on Tuesday evening. Away at Bromley, The Iron struck either side of half time to win 2-1. Dan Sparkes scored Braintree's opening goal on 23 minutes. Simeon Akinola was originally thought to have scored Braintree's second, although this was eventually credited to debutant Jordan Chiedozie.
Braintree were beaten by Lincoln and Chester in their opening two games, but stopped the slide with a very creditable 0-0 draw against Tranmere Rovers at the Amlin Stadium. Simeon Akinola scored The Iron's only other goal of the season in Braintree's game against Lincoln City.
Braintree manager Dan Cowley told local paper The Essex Chronicle that after two games unbeaten, the aim is extend the streak to three games with the visit of Southport on Saturday, and had been pleased with Braintree's performances so far this season.
Gary Brabin led Southport to victory at the Amlin Stadium last season, with goals from Luke George and Amadou Bakayoko securing a 2-0 victory.
However Braintree returned the favour in our penultimate home game of the season, leaving the Merseyrail Community Stadium as 2-0 victors.
Since Braintree's promotion to the Conference for the 11/12 season, Southport have enjoyed more success away against the Iron than at home. At the Merseyrail Community Stadium, Braintree have won 4 times without conceding with two 4-0 wins and two 2-0 wins, whereas Southport have recorded two wins and a draw over the last 4 seasons away.
Southport take two training sessions before the trip to Braintree. On Thursday Southport trained with Crossfit ASG before departure on Friday where the team will stop in the local area for a further training session before Saturday's big game.
Southport are reeling from the loss of Louis Almond, who tweaked his hamstring during the Gateshead match. Current indications Almond will be unavailable for a period of around 4 weeks.
Andrai Jones suspension is now complete, and will now likely go straight back into the starting 11 on Saturday.
Andy Wright will undergo a fitness test during Friday training following a groin injury. With Wright having undertaken other positive tests throughout the week, manager Paul Carden is expecting Wright to be available on Saturday.
Michael Brewster, yet to make his competitive Southport debut, is also available.
