TODAY'S MATCH
We've tried to secure local opposition at very short notice without success. We'd like to thank our neighbouring clubs who have tried to help but a variety of circumstances have left that without success. Danny has now decided to utilise the full squad, plus a couple of our academy lads, to play a full ninety minute match that will be between two balanced Braintree XIs at Cressing Road. Kick-off for this match has been provisionally arranged for 1pm, subject to the availability of a local referee. More news when I have it!

Somebody should let Terry know, he has to come in 7 hours early. Happy hour perhaps.

The only goal of the game came in the second half when Michael Cheek slipped Matt Fry through for a one on one with Nathan McDonald and he coolly slipped the ball into the far corner at the clubhouse end. The attendance was 39, and teamsheets for the game are available free of charge from the Supporters Club Shop on Tuesday evening.

For many years there were tight restrictions imposed by the F.A. on pre-season games and the club were limited to one annual home trial match before going into the competitive games. These public games were billed variously as 'Stripes v Whites', 'A v B', 'Probables v Possibles', 'First Team v Reserves' etc. The local press would invariably comment on the performances of the players and speculate on the likely starting line up for the first league game, but the scores were seldom printed. The Stripes v Whites game on 22nd August 1934 attracted a crowd in excess of 1000. The match on 14th August 1954, as Iron were about to embark on their one season as a professional side, attracted 700. The last of these matches was in 1960, with this weekend's game being the first one held for 55 years. From 1961 onward the club were able to play several friendly fixtures against other teams.

We could have had a couple of hundred in if it hadn't been such a hastily arranged affair. Seeing the images of the Lowestoft pitch soon after the calling off of the game it looks like the groundsman didn't want any scuffs on the pitch.

Quite a few people missing - Habergham, Isaac, Cox, for instance. Any reason? Still with us, I hope
