After a slow start Iron could have broken the deadlock on 20 minutes when Simeon Akinola pounced on a kind rebound to race towards the Sudbury keeper Marcus Garnham. He rounded the keeper but could only hit the post. Five minutes later Akinola benefitted from good work from James Mulley, but his snapshot was well stopped by Garnham and cleared off the line by James Baker. Braintree broke the deadlock on 57 minutes. James Mulley put pressure on the Sudbury defence and Ben Robinson's poor clearance fell to Akinola who volleyed home from close range. Charlie Strutton came on for Mitch Brundle on 65 minutes and Dan Sparkes for Akinola with ten minutes remaining. Sparkes almost made an instant impact when his shot dipped just wide of the target on 85 minutes. AFC Sudbury's best chance fell with two minutes remaining. A Jack Wilkinson free-kick for the visitors was met by James Baker's header, but the former Iron player was in an offside position. The draw for the second Round will be made on Monday and will be on the Club website as soon as we have it. Braintree Town: Nick Hamann, Ryan Peters, Sam Habergham, Matt Paine, Alan Massey, Mitch Brundle (sub: Charlie Strutton 65m), Kenny Davis, Chez Isaac, James Mulley, Simeon Akinola (sub: Dan Sparkes 80m), Sean Marks. Un-used subs: Remy Clerima, Steve Smith, Carl Pentney. Attendance: 547.

A very uninspiring victory for the Iron. Credit to Sudbury they was up for it from the off. Impressed with their no9 ( Not Ours !!). Thought we looked sluggish firsthalf , if it was not for Sim it would of been a poor poor display. Not sure why Mitch played on the wing ? looked lost. How Charlies class showed when he came on it was stupid. Such an intelligent football brain. If we play that lethargic next Sat Torquay will wipe the floor with us.Tactically I still dont see what we are doing, Second half the right hand side opened up and everytime Ryan pushed forward we threatened. Team Ratings Today and remember this is only my £15 worth opinion!!! Nik 6 Little to do thought he made a smart save at the end though Ryan 7 Game of 2 halves for him much better in 2nd. Sam 6 Beaten for skill to easily in first half and strengthened up 2nd Alan 6 Threaten little and kept the no10 quiet Matt 6 Gives Devs a headache of who to play central defence Mitch 5 Played out of position and subbed no surprise Chez 6 Did ok usual game Kenny 6 Some good flashes but weak in the tackle James 5 The crab was in full sideways flow today ! Sim 7.5 MOTM Took goal well and yes he should of had 3/4 but at least one of the strikers is in the position to get the chances. Sean 3 Offered little, did little and i 4 1 am gobsmacked to see his name on the team sheet weak in weak out even the Sudbury fans next to us questioned his performance. His pass in the second half summed him up Clueless! .
All in all money in the bank for the club and who knows take this competition seriously and wem-ber-ley ?? Good to see some top connie teams dumped out today, just proves the lower league teams should be take seriously. I hope Devs has a full squad to select from for next Sat and I hope the Number 9 is not included, come back Jordan at least you can score You can jump and head the ball and at least you dont just flap and moan. Iron made hard work of this one. Both sides tried to gain the upper hand in the opening exchanges and it was even for the first 20 minutes. As Webbo stated above; Akinola had the first real chance and having done all the hard work and set himself to apply the finish into a net guarded by one defender; he somehow managed to hit the post from 8/10 yards. He must've left his scoring boots in the changing room and could have had a hat trick as the Iron began to assert themselves. The second half started off sloppily; but having found his scoring boots; Akinola was to find the net after a good cross from Peters was partially cleared and eventually fell to Simeon to strike into the bottom right of the goal passed a statuesque keeper. You always felt that at 1-0 Sudbury might get one big chance and it came late on with a header from a free kick that hit the bar. Ratings: Hamann - 7, not his busiest afternoon. Peters - 7, more crosses please and less running inside Habergham - 6, not overworked defensively or in the oppo's half. Paine - 7, filled in well at centre back Massey - 6, sometimes troubled by movement of forwards Brundle - 5 strangely played on right midfield, offered little. Mulley - 5, ineffective on left wing; moved inside late on Davis - 7 worked hard, tackled well, passed simply Isaac - 6 what you'd expect from Chez, pressing oppo. Akinola - 8 despite chances spurned, he did get the vital goal and constant threat, please try going outside the full back some times.
Onward to the visit of former League 2 and Helsbells Chamberlain's Torquay next Saturday.

So the only real difference between the teams was home advantage? This season we've played two sides from two div's below us and we've struggled, when we played a team two above us, they wiped the floor with us. There really seems a motivation/organisation issue with the squad these days, I never thought I'd ever say that with a Devs team.

I dont get it completely different team to last season and only a handful of new faces. Things carry on like this we need to watch over our shoulder.

Marksy did what he's best at, winning the ball and laying it off, but as I' ve said before he's not a lone striker , he needs Charlie close by to lay it off to but most of the game he was on his own.

Ironmansimon and dbbn I'm sure if you had a word with marksy in the clubhouse after the match you could explain what he doing wrong and what he could do. You could use your voice then and give your fingers a rest.

What would be your view then I would love to hear.

Would be a boring forum if we all agreed. We have some quality players, just need to play them to their strengths. I'm one of those whose spirits drop when I see the team sheet and Marksy is our loan striker, but feel totally different when he's playing along side someone.

You could use your voice then and give your fingers a rest. I don't doubt that Sean tries his best, but in my opinion, that is not good enough for this league. His goalscoring has plummeted from when I first started coming here in Oct 2012; in fact he scored in the first game I saw against Gateshead. I think he went on to score about 10 that season, more than the much lauded Dan Holman. He was a half decent centre forward who did a good job for the team. Sadly in the 2012/13 and current season he has not been able to perform to those levels. He doesn't win as many headers and those he does win rarely find a team mate. He has no pace to threaten defences; he fails to hold up the ball and often hits the deck hoping for a foul. He has managed to score once this season and failed to connect with a presentable chance provided by Charlie on Saturday. I trust that you find this a reasoned and balanced response. Perhaps you would like to give a counter positive response to why you think Sean should be leading our front line?

Maybe some should try playing with pain killing How does that affect anything that my now good friend dbbn has said, Your trying to make excuses for a loyal club player that as clearly stated in previous posts is not good enough at this level. I sympathise with Devs injury hit season and full respect to players that play through the pain barrier but our lack of goals and people to score them will be our downfall at this level. This is not a personal attack on Sean, a number of our players have I believe not performed to the best of their ability this season. And I for one as a LOYAL supporter get emotionally involved in each and every game. We are in this together lets not bitch amoungst ourselves, just cause people air their views dont knock it. Ultimately we all want success brought to the town, who knows we could even make a visit to that big London ground with a large arch over it !! Just because people dont visit the clubhouse or are not members of the supporters club it does not make us fans.

The attack is very light weight with what I see as substandard players for this level. Young Jordan Cox isn't ready and should be retained. Simeon Akinola has been great but still needs to learn a thing or two at conference level. As for the other marksmen well their record speaks for itself and if a player is so injured that it prevents them from doing what they're on the pitch to do they shouldn't be playing. As we've seen our forwards have missed sitters week in and week out, thats not to be defended surely. But I guess there's people at the club with blind loyalty as Simon suggests. I even hear people say bring back Bailey-Dennis and Rod Stringer and then I see the aviation fuel sniffers fighting relegation themselves.

Of course Sean should start. Without him we do not have a target man. What we do not have is a player who can feed off him. Lets hope that when Charlie is able to go 90mins he can finish what Sean can provide.
Ok he is not the quickest player in the team but he takes a hell of amount of knocks as front man. I thought he was our second best player against Sudbury. Chez was head and shoulders above anyone else. One or two other midfield players had a real off day at the office but no Sean has been singled out as the villain.
I will say this IF HE NEVER KICKS ANOTHER BALL FOR BRAINTREE FC HE WILL OWE US NOTHING.

We won more games with Cox leading the line and he scored more goals. Like us to play more like we did against Bristol Rovers; particularly pleasing was Sparkes goal after some good neat passing and movement. We're too one dimensional when Marks plays and I'm sorry to disagree; but he really isn't that good a target man. Pity we don't get Opta stats to see how he actually performs re headers won, fouls won, completed passes, shots on target etc.

If we could play the ball on the ground and thro midfield then yes I would agree the a target man is not required but we don't.
Yes we did it against Bristol Rovers but that was early September when the ground was firm.
The surface now is very heavy and I am not sure we have players able to play that type of game during the heavy pitch days, hence the long ball missing out the midfield. This is not a criticism of any player or players but a fact.
We are a part time side in a full time league and I for one am very grateful for every season we keep in this league.

Apart from Robsmia, no one else has given good reasons why Marks is their preference. Come on guys be constructive in your arguments for Sean rather than just having a go at those who would prefer someone different.

Since September in the League, we have won two out of fourteen & they were against teams struggling for form. Apart from those two wins we have scored twice in the other twelve league outings. That is relegation form & if it wasn’t for our fantastic start we would be in the relegation mire now. The two wins papered over the cracks of a scoring problem. We should of disposed of Sudbury with goals galore giving the team a confidence boost. That did not happen. Saturday is crunch time with us being five points off the relegation zone and a defeat to Torquay & we are looking over our shoulders. Fans who dare voice their concerns are ridiculed. To all those like Robsmia that are grateful to be playing at this level & go along with the “We are part time in a full time league” stance. When do you reach the point when you are prepared to say enough is enough? Is it when we go into the relegation zone? Is it when we get relegated? Is it next season in the conference south? When do you stop spouting the party line & say enough is enough? Everyone loves Dev’s but if things don’t change starting with scoring goals we are going down. Also if we go down does anyone really see Devs staying

This is supposed to be a thread about the Sudbury match, not a points scoring game among Iron fans as to what or who is to blame for our current lack of form. Its about time we all get behind the MT and the players to ensure we all do what we can to make sure we push on in the 2nd half of the season and not bicker amongst ourselves about what has gone before.

People can ridicule me for stating the bleedin' obvious, but we are in trouble full stop. My spies told me they watched Sudbury a week before we played them and they weren't even a good Ryman side on the day. The only thing that pleased me was the fact we won, after I'd feared we'd suffer the humiliation of having to replay at their gaffe or worse. Not only that, this was an opportunity to impress our visitors from Sudbury by demonstrating that we're an impressive side worth travelling the 14 miles from Suffolk to watch. I'm not confident from reports I've read that any will think that and we wonder why we struggle with gates. On paper we have a good squad of players, possibly the best we've had in the four seasons at this level, yes we've had an horrendous injury toll, plus bad luck. With this having been the case, why no loanees? I see that Ben Wright netted two for Havant & Waterlooville overnight, didn't he leave us to be a full time footballer? but now plays for a part time club at a lower status to us. Is he signed up by H&W books these days? Still too early to panic but to dither and stick heads in the sand and hope strikers which fail week after week will like magic find their shooting boots is akin to fiddling while watching Rome burn imo. One has to wonder why the other players aren't chipping in with odd goal or two as they do at most other clubs? Stay complacent about things and we'll find out the hard way. Also if we go down does anyone really see Devs staying [/quote] Don't go there Simon.

Barry Shepherd Here... I Only use Baswaldsmate on our site. Have only ever used this name on Iron Chatter.
My thoughts on postings.... THIS IS FANS SITE so fans pay their money they have there say.
Re Shaun Marks If you ask Shaun he will tell you I regularly tell him I am turning bid;s down for him from TAKLEY. (Just banter between the 2 of us before it get's twisted).
So let's now get on with getting our team back on winning way's.
My love of the Iron has been given new height's by players like shaun and our manager Dev's so they cannot allways be perfect but I have faith in our club.
