The Iron were given a good football lesson by a fit, sharp and enthusiastic 1st division Chesterfield. Ok their first goal may have looked offside but the way they had attacked down the left flank and totally overwhelmed young Sowunmi more goals were inevitable.
After half time Cox came on for Marks and Strutton for Brundle we did look a bit more effective up front but the backs were still being torn apart and the goals continued. The home crowd were willing the team just to get one goal but it was not to be with Jordan putting a header over the bar and again getting tied up with his feet in front of goal.Perhaps Jordan needs to speak to one of those sports psychologist! Another point to be made is when players get a sight of goal they need to have the confidence to have a go aka James Mulley.
Looking on the positive side perhaps a good work out with Chesterfield today will give the team some impetuous to go on and do better in the league .

Nik - How many more mistakes has he got to make in goal before Pentney gets a chance..... Ryan - did ok but gave ball away too cheaply Sam - another player that needs a kick up the backside- too soft in the challenge and guilty of standing a country mile off his man n gifting him the chance to easily put the ball in!! Omar- a day for him to forget....... Off the pace n gave ball away cheaply! Alan - by far our best player - won most headers and tried where others gave up!! Mitch - covered s lot of ground trying to get hold of the ball but gave ball back to them too easily! Chez- headless chicken sums him up! Kenny - did he play??? James - needs to be more positive with his decisions and learn how to shoot with power! Simeon - tried his luck with a few runs but was not given much of the ball and was tightly marked! Sean - out muscled and marshalled by their defence!
Jordan - needs a confidence boost from somewhere- on another day could've had 2 or 3 Charlie - 1 good shot and clearly struggling for fitness!! Remy - the less said about his OG the better!!
Overall a poor game from a Braintree view - we never showed any of the iron spirit that has served us well in the past few seasons - we gave them too much respect and far too much time and space on the ball!' We were also not helped by the officials- how did their keeper stay on after sything down Jordan on the edge of the box- surely as the ref gave a foul then there needed to be a card for such a reckless challenge!! Devs needs to have a good look at his squad and sort out those committed to the cause from those in for an easy ride...... There seems to be too many just turning up of late and not putting a shift in!!!!! Tuesday will be tough down at Dover but that said I wouldn't bet against us!!!

Some good points Rustynail, but for me the set up was wrong from the off today. As I stated in an earlier post if we started with Sean upfront it was all over from there. I know I cant just blame him but the spine of the team looked weak, from Nik, Omar , Chez , james to Sean I hope all 5 are dropped for Dover. Just not good enough. I feel sorry for Dan Walker a player that has improved in recent weeks and finds himself not even coming on as sub way behind Sean and The Crab !I just dont get it! Time for a real shake up I think, good to see Remy back and how much better did we look attacking 2nd half, ok Jordan could not hit a barn door from 2 paces lately but at least he is in those positions so it will happen.Eventually .....! Ok so Chesterfield were fitter stronger and more technical than us but we had chances in the game and had we of taken them who knows. Good crowd although be surprised to see half of them come back for Saturday, excellent observed minutes silence, and must mention Alan Massey who was the man among the boys today. Onto tues when the two teams with polar opposite weekends clash, what do we think? Sean hat trick? Mulley straight run on goal or Jordan belter from 30 yards whatever the outcome , COYI! Team ratings Nik 4 Poor could it be time to see Carl ? Ryan 7 Solid enough but Had to cover middle at times Omar 3 - Woeful from the big fella, Will it be his last game ? Alan 8 MOTM Did himself proud against a strong attack and blocked and tackled hard Sam 5 Exposed time and time again. Chez 3 Looked out of his depth again No end product again, needs to be dropped for while. Mitch 4 Not over surprised to see him subbed, Overran and out of position . Kenny 5 Fails to lead the team vocally, again overran. James 3 Promises so much but delivers so little, Why Walker not in that role ? Simeon 7 Did ok showed his flair and better on wing than upfront Sean 1 Or 8.5 Depending on what view you have ! Seriously what does he offer the team? Goals? Pace ? Aerial threat ? Skillful touches. No . I think I suggested at the start of the season that perhaps we should look at Sean as a defensive option ?
Subs Jordan 8 for effort 6 for performance Charlie 6 fought losing battle Remy 6 Good to see him back
Good luck to Chesterfield in next round, should be a problem for most of the teams left in the draw.
My line up for tues based on today Carl Ryan Remy Alan Sam Matt Kenny Simeon Dan W Charlie Jordan
Subs Mitch Dan S Chez James Nik
Are the reserves playing soon so Sean can play? Was listening to a few old duffers on terraces today saying Devs out ? Really ? carry on picking Sean and dropping down the table, who knows. Not me though I have think he knows a little bit more bout the game than me. ( Despite my match views on here!)

My heart sank when I heard the team read out and Marks was starting. The second half we played with the side I had suggested on another thread and we looked more threatening. Yes Cox does fluff his lines often, but Marks doesn't even get on the same page! Twice he was put through, but his lack of mobility saw his chances easily snuffed out by a recovering defender. I'm as frustrated as everyone else with the chances Jordan misses, but at least he has found the net this season and is more mobile and makes things happen for those around him. Pleasing too to see us pass the ball in the second half, long may it continue.

I'm glad the BBC match commentary was locked to overseas listeners owing to broadcasting rights even so, I still awoke at half time to check my tablet to see us 3-0 down, so switched off and went back to sleep.
Will we ever be a giant killing side? Do we freeze on the big day? Worse still why do we do this on days when we should be showcasing ourselves to casual newcomers to the game plus more watching on the box? I know a couple of our supporters went the extra mile for the club by helping advertise this game, all credit goes to them.
Maybe it's the standard of player we have at the club who find the big occasions just a bridge too far for them. This in contrast to our run of the mill league games when perhaps we play at or near the top of our ability. When we're working hard and getting our game together we're matching the Chester's of this world, yet the Chester's can dig deeper and run lower league opposition closer than we can and stand the chance of becoming 'giant killers'. Then they wrap themselves in glory and more importantly will have showcased their club to all and sundry. People love glamour and will associate themselves with it.
This is not so much a criticism of our lads but an attempt at lifting the bonnet to work out why instead of roaring, the engine goes flat as the pedal hits the metal.

Good points raised by ozbrit. I heard a comment behind me on the way out to the effect of - "That's why I don't come every week". What were they expecting? Devs had said earlier in the week that if we have a good day and they have a bad day, then who knows? We could play Chesterfield 50 times and be lucky to get 1 or 2 wins and a few draws.

Don't like to criticise any player, but I have to say when I saw Sean's name on the starting line-up I just thought we have no chance of scoring. Sean needs a partner up front with him, he is very good at winning the ball and laying it off for another striker. Thank goodness for Alan, otherwise it could have been double figures. Come on then own up, who put sleeping tablets in the Chesterfield supporters tea?, they were noticeable by their lack of vocal support.

Not going to single out any player but once the first goal went in it was all over, we were doing OK until then but to be honest to lose 6-0 at home to a side only two divisions above is an embarrassment.
Never really looked up for it and one or two completely lost bottle once the first goal went in, you can excuse a lack of quality if the players are not good enough then it's the manager who brought them in albeit on a tiny budget, but you can't excuse some of the performances and the lack of effort on Sunday.
Everyone needs to take a long hard look at themselves(and although I like the bloke)on this occasion that includes the manager.

That would have been a good draw. (MK Dons away) All the non league teams seem to be drawn away tonight. (Dartford, Dover, Concord, Worcester, Blyth etc)
I have a soft spot for Mk Dons, was invited last season by the President of the club as a guest of honour, to their FA Cup game at home to Halifax, they are a friendly club with a fantastic attitude. Attached some of the pics.

Suppose it was a poor crowd, but when you compare the population of Braintree 42,000+ to the BIG CITY team down the road in the Conference South 168,000+ we don't do too bad.
