This time last year I was so confident that we were going to do well that I was tempted to put a couple of hundred quid on us being promoted. I'm afraid this year I do not have that confidence, after this run of friendlies. Yes we were only beaten 2:1 by Cambridge, a good result in fairness against a league team, but we lost badly against Chelmsford. It is our inability to score goals in open play which worries me. Our only one today was again a penalty, after several missed goal opportunities in the first half. But fingers crossed and I look forward to how the season turns out. The Cambridge News has got a report up really fast today! www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Sport/Cambridge-United/Tom-Elliott-at-the-double-for-Cambridge-United-in-triumph-at-Braintree-20140726163214.htm

I wouldn't worry too much 1672; friendlies never give a true reflection of how a season will pan out. For me, Paine has to play centre back, anyone else who's featured there during the friendlies has not filled me with confidence. Mitch Brundle has done okay at right back; but haven't seen much of the rest to form a strong opinion. What we can be confident in, is Dev's ability to sort it out.

Seriously whats the panic, I don't remember us being that prolific or taking our chances last season, and still we finished 6th our highest ever. Dan H has been replaced by Monsieur Strutton who is a better player and will not be rushed back. Dean will be replaced soon and some of the squad really have not featured yet. Dan Sparkes and Ryan Peters 2 solid players nursing injuries that wont be risked in a 2 bob bit so called friendly. If anyone thinks that Sean is our number one striker now they are much mistaken. Dan Walker has played in several dif positions and not settled yet. Time is of the essence and I have faith in what Devs does. Dont rush things it will all fall into place. Just because we not making 6- 10 signings like most squads lets not panic, they will take time to gel where as the nucleus of our team is established and knows what to do. Friendlies in my view are a bit of a waste as no one really tries except the trialist who wanna make an impression, 1672 hang on to your dough but 10 weeks time lets just take stock and see whats occurring. Have faith and believe once again. 1672 if you have any worries after this weeks matches just look at last season home match V Southport 31 + chances 1 Goal. The defence rests your honour

Please no Paine at centre back look at our record with him there , Not good, Paine needs to sit infront of centre halves although that sacrifices a midfielder. He drops too deep and needs the pressence of team mates behind him. I do agree with Mitch though would be a good buy, Maybe then shuffle Ryan to partner Alan? What do we know anyway, In Devs we trust.

Wise words dbbn. I'm actually more confident this pre-season than before that we'll get to the play-offs at least. At last a decent front line when Strutton is fit, with Dan Walker looking quick and lively (why was he taken off so soon?). Thought Brundle well worth a punt, and Louhoungou seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Bit disappointed with Bakare today, unless he'd been told to shoot on sight, but great performances from Davis and Mulley. I'm glad we haven't bought a whole new team like so many of our rivals - our stability has been one of our great strengths over the past few years. Keep the faith, 1672!!

I was much encouraged by your views, folks, until I read today's NLP. Firstly, the Cambridge match report repeats my view; "in which Town struggled to find accuracy in their shooting". More importantly, in an interview, Devs reports his difficulties in signing players, as any he has hopes of signing are snatched away by bigger clubs who have sent people to watch them and then offering full-time status and pay. That probably explains why in the last two friendlies his team sheet has a number of unnamed trialists, to try to confuse their identity from scouts. At present he has just 13 players signed up and is "urging fans to rein in expectations"

I believe that we are still the attractive part-time club to play for that we've always been. Perhaps it's just that, having finished sixth last season, more and more are keeping an eye on who we're trialing - on the basis that, if they're good enough for Braintree, ...
Personally, I take that as a back-handed compliment.
Alan will sort it, as ever, but we continue to learn a new lesson every day and we're reacting accordingly. Yesterday, Cambridge declined to name a trialist and we're doing the same - let other clubs find their own players, eh?
Long term, we've now four quality strikers at the Club. Two have short-term injuries and Charlie's doing well with his rehab. Yes, we've had to replace Dan Holman, but I think we're all pleased with his replacements!
Adding a quality centre-half is very much work in progress and Alan has sensible resources to do so. The released Luke Daley to one side, the remainder of last season's successful squad are with us once again - all a year older and a year wiser.
Alan is sensibly cautious, but pre-season is (after all) just pre-season. Every year we're the bookies favourites for relegation and, it would seen, every year we let them down.

Hope this season we are going to be more positive and make our aim 77pts instead of the usual 51 or so points.
